A writing app for branching stories — press kit
Page last updated October 16, 2026
A writing app for branching stories. The author writes numbered pages and links each choice to the page it leads to; readers tap a choice and turn straight there. ChooseWeaver publishes the story for the web, for e-readers and for print. No code.

What makes it different
- Pages, numbered like the classic gamebooks. Each page holds its text, a picture or a sound, and its choices. Every choice points at the page it leads to.
- Tap to turn. On the web and in the e-book, a reader taps a choice and lands on its page. In print, the same choice reads “turn to page 42”, with the number of the printed page.
- One story, three editions. A web package for any browser, an EPUB that opens in Apple Books, EPUB 3 readers and Kindle, and a PDF ready for a paper book.
- The Storyboard. Every page and every link on one board. Pages no choice reaches, and choices that lead nowhere, are flagged before a reader finds them.
- Endings that count. The author marks each ending good, bad or neutral. Readers reach THE END, go Back or Restart, and the web edition keeps a list of the endings they have found, and remembers where they left off.
- Coming from Twine? Passages become pages and links become choices.
- A story you own. Sell it, share it, print it.
- Your stories never leave your computer. No account, no sign-in, no data collected; feedback goes to us only when you send it.
ChooseWeaver and GrueWeaver
Both are Widget Press writing apps for Mac and Windows, and both import Twine. ChooseWeaver is choice-based: readers tap a choice, and the story publishes for the web, e-readers and print. GrueWeaver is parser-based: players explore a world and type what they do, and the game publishes as a web game with images, music and sound effects.
About the maker
J.P. Freeman is a graphic designer turned programmer. He started in print, moved to the web, consulted with Fortune 100 companies on web UI/UX, and ran Widget Press as a software company from 2001 to 2017, shipping FormEntry and ModelBaker for Mac and iOS.
He spent ten years making The Chronicles of Nether Wallop and the Five Bells, a parser adventure told in screenplay style, and then GrueWeaver, which puts its engine in other writers' hands. ChooseWeaver does the same for stories told in pages and choices.
He grew up on a Commodore 64, and text adventures held the sweet spot.

The AI question, answered plainly
ChooseWeaver has no AI features. Every word a reader sees is the author's.
How it is made: Widget Press is one human, J.P. Freeman, with a staff of six AI colleagues who help plan, build and test its apps. Everything that ships passes through him first. The full account of how Widget Press works with AI, with its dated record of changes, is at netherwallop.com/how-its-made.
The art: ChooseWeaver's app icon, the open book woven with golden threads, began as a generative AI image. J.P. Freeman reworked it in VectorCraft.
The short version, for quotation: “ChooseWeaver has no AI features. Every word a reader sees is the author's.”
